Where We’re Headed: The Future of Lodi Boathouse, Paddling, and Our Online Store

A dockside morning,
and a bigger picture...

Let me introduce myself.... My name is Josh but the kids at our kayak day camps know me as "Riptide". I love the outdoors, getting on the water and I love my career as manager of the Lodi Boathouse. I work alongside the Boathouse owner, Abba and we have a passion to see more people experience nature the way it was meant to be. Pure. Simple. Serene. Powerful. Some mornings at the Boathouse start quietly. The water is glassy, the docks are cool under bare feet, and families arrive with water bottles in one hand and life jackets in the other. Boards slide onto the lake, paddles dip, and the whole place slowly comes alive. Those moments are why Lodi Boathouse exists—but they’re also what’s shaping where we’re headed next. Over the years, we’ve noticed something important: people don’t just come to rent a paddleboard or kayak. They come looking for confidence. For guidance. For quality gear so they don’t have to second-guess. And for a place that helps lake days feel simple instead of stressful. That’s what this next chapter is about. This is our vision for the future of Lodi Boathouse paddling—on the water, online, and everywhere in between.

More than rentals: why gear matters more than people think

Rentals will always be at the heart of what we do. They’re how most people get their first taste of paddling, and there’s nothing like seeing someone stand up on a board for the first time. But over time, we’ve learned that the real game-changer isn’t just access to the water—it’s having the right setup.

The wrong paddle can make a calm lake feel exhausting. A poorly fitting life jacket can turn a fun outing into an uncomfortable one. Even small things, like dry storage or sun protection, can be the difference between cutting a day short and staying out longer than planned. These details matter, especially for families and first-timers.

That’s why we’re building a gear-first approach into everything we do next. Not to sell more stuff—but to help people enjoy the water with fewer surprises and more confidence.

What we’re building online
(and why it’s intentional)

Our online store isn’t meant to be a massive marketplace or a wall of random products. It’s an extension of the dock. Everything we carry—or recommend—comes from real use, real feedback, and real lake days here in Lodi.

You’ll start seeing:

  • Paddle gear we trust for local conditions

  • Lake-ready apparel that actually works in the heat and sun

  • Accessories that make loading, carrying, and storing easier

These aren’t trends. They’re tools. They’re the things our staff uses, what our regulars ask about, and what keeps showing up in conversations at the Boathouse.

When we point something out, it’s because we’ve found it makes lake days smoother—not because it looks good in a photo.

Built from local water, not generic advice

Lodi Lake isn’t the ocean, and it’s not a mountain reservoir either. Wind patterns, water temps, crowds, and family dynamics all shape what works best here. That local understanding is something you can’t replicate with generic outdoor advice.

We’ve spent seasons watching what people forget, what breaks, what gets replaced, and what ends up being a lifesaver halfway through the day. We’ve helped nervous beginners, returning paddlers, and grandparents paddling with grandkids. Those experiences inform everything we recommend.

Our goal is simple: fewer mistakes, fewer wasted purchases, and more time actually enjoying the water.

Community first, always

Lodi Boathouse has never been just a business at the lake. It’s a gathering place. A starting point. A familiar face when you come back year after year. As we grow online, that doesn’t change—it expands.

The blogs we write, the gear guides we share, and the emails we send are all meant to feel like a conversation you’d have leaning against the dock railing. Helpful, honest, and grounded in experience. No pressure. No hype. Just information that makes your next paddle better.

See you at the lake

The future of Lodi Boathouse isn’t about getting bigger for the sake of it. It’s about helping more people feel at home on the water—whether that starts at the dock or online before the weekend hits.

So grab a paddle, take it slow, and enjoy the lake. And when you’re ready, stop by the Boathouse or check in with us online. We’ll be here, doing what we’ve always done—helping lake days feel like they should.

Picture of Josh
Howdy friends! My name is Josh—though at kayak camp the kids call me “Riptide.” I love paddling all around California, from the calm waters of Lodi Lake to hidden river bends. When I’m not out exploring, I’m managing the Boathouse and leading tours to help others enjoy life on the water.
