Course Requirements: Good health and a sense of adventure. This 3-day kayak instruction course is designed to introduce beginner paddlers to the sport of kayaking and coastal kayaking skills. Our goal is to provide beginner kayakers with a solid foundation of basic kayaking skills necessary to kayak on flat-water and be introduced to tidal waterways.
This includes:
This course will begin from our riverside headquarters on the Mokelumne River.
Day 1 we will introduce students to their kayaking gear and assist them with boat fitting. We will then hop on the water and learn the basics of kayak handling, maneuvering, edge control and balance through exercises and drills.
Day 2 of this course will be focused on rescue techniques and rescue equipment. After going over rescue equipment on land, we will paddle to the river and learn the safest way to exit our boats when on the water, including wet exits when using skirts. We will then begin learning self rescue and buddy rescue techniques.
Day 3 is when we put all of our new found knowledge to practical use! We will meet at a location on our local delta where we will explore the waterways using navigation skills, water reading, scouting, and safe paddling techniques. This 3rd day on the water allows for practicing time as our techniques become second nature. Your instructor will continue to provide more detailed suggestions and will be there to support the group as they navigate a new location.
By encouraging consecutive days on the water, the structure of this program allows for better knowledge retention and allows you to get the most out of your time on the water.
Our Instructors
Our instructors are all ACA certified with a passion and enthusiasm for kayaking that we are excited to share! We maintain a teacher to student ratio of 1:5, or less, to allow for plenty of individualized attention. Each of our instructors are skilled in pinpointing any issues a new paddler may face and providing creative solutions based on learning styles. At the end of the course, our instructors will provide each student with a summary and review of skills that were learned, and advice on areas for you to work on in the future. This course includes all equipment necessary. This course does not include food or transportation. If you would like to bring your own equipment, please contact us so we can make sure you have all the equipment needed. If you do not have every piece of equipment needed then we can provide that or help you obtain it.
